During a vist back to my homeland of Lakeland, Florida, I was yearning the hop taste i love, but had a very hard time finding a local bar that served anything other than wanted down bland commercial brews. Lukily I stumbled upon a new beer and wine store that had a large selection of Craft Brewers. To quinche my need for a hoppy beer, I decided to give Steelhead Double IPA a shot from the Mad River Brewing Co. After pouring the beer, the smell was very strong almost pungent and overwelmingly filled with hops. The beer looked very amber brown with lots of cloudiness. The taste was very bitter and any malt presence was covered up by hops finished with a raisin/citrus taste. The beer definately packed a punch with an IBU of 85 and ABV of 8.6%. I think three or four of these would put anyone on the floor and tasting hops for days. This beer definalte filled my hop craving and I would recommend this beer to the hardcore IPA lovers with a liking for a high content of alcohol.

Looking to impress your friends the next time you’re sitting around trying to figure out the best way to crack open a nice cold brew? Beercasters.com is here to help. Here is a quick list of several simple and inventive ways to use everyday objects to crack off that bottle cap. These methods won’t break the glass bottle or ruin that sparkling set of teeth you’ve spent so many years (and dollars at the dentist) taking care of. Almost all of these tricks utilize a solid edge to leverage against the bottle’s cap, and you can find most of them laying around the house right now….

1. Paper trick
This is a very neat trick. So, let’s say you have nothing but a piece of paper, or a couple of George Washington’s, in your wallet. Here’s how to open a beer bottle with a piece of paper:

Take the paper or money and fold it up several times over, until its is a tightly-compressed piece, which should look like a “V” shape (two folded bits that meet in one sharp, tight corner).

Take the “V” part and wedge the corner of it’s fold into the bottle cap. (don’t worry, example video below)

Jerk the bill up as hard as you can, which will result in the cap popping off.

Although this can work with any bills, it is better to use a bigger piece of paper.

2. The buckle trick
If you have a belt on… which most people do if they want their pants to stay up. Here’s how to open a beer bottle with a belt buckle:

Take off your belt. (If your pant’s are falling down, have a friend hold them up until you get the beer open.)

Fit any edge of the buckle as tight as possible over any edge of the cap.

Using your thumb, push hard as hard as possible on the other edge of the buckle, which should with enough force will pop the cap right off.

Drink, and don’t forget to put your belt back on… I’m sure your friend is getting tired of holding them up. Also if you are belt-less this trick will also work with dog or cat collars, if they are big enough.

3. Keys
Everyone has keys, so lets make the most of them. Here’s how to open a beer bottle with a key:

It’s best to use a key whose teeth you can wedge nice and tight between the bottle’s neck and the cap. Grab the keys in one hand and the bottle in the other hand.

Now, using all your might and strength, twist the key under the cap and pull the side of the cap away from the bottle. This procedure will produce a tiny gap between the bottle and the cap.

Now using the first gap, repeat this process in another spot under the cap.

By the time you have made it half way around, you should be able to simply grip the cap with your fingers and thumb and somewhat easily twist it off. If not, keep twisting the key under the cap until you’ve loosened the cap to get it off.

4. End table/Kitchen drawer handle
This is one of Beercaster’s most used tricks. Here’s how to open a beer bottle with a kitchen drawer or end table handle:

Find an end table or kitchen drawer handle that will nicely fit your beer bottle cap underneath. (example video below)

Once the beer is locked into place, slowly push the beer down and see the cap come off

It’s important to be very careful with this trick because beer can spew out if it was been shaken up and the beer can fall out if there is too much of an angle.

5. The old lighter trick
If you have a lighter hanging around, you might have a hope of drinking beer today. Here’s how to open a beer bottle with a lighter.

Place the bottom of the lighter (NOT the metal top) against the cap’s edge.

Gripping the bottleneck tightly and using your hand as leverage for the lighter, push up on the cap with the edge of your lighter. This should loosen the cap, if not completely pop it off.

If it doesn’t take the cap off right away, turn the bottle slightly in your hand and apply pressure to another area of the cap.

Drink up.

6. Ring
The ring trick can almost be magic to friends if you do it the right way. This is how to open a beer bottle using a ring:

You’ll need to keep the ring on for this trick and grasp the top of the bottle in your hand.

Close your hand over the cap and make sure the edge of your ring is flush against the bottom of the cap.

Keeping your grip tight, lift up so that the edge of your ring will peel off the cap.

Be wary of using an expensive ring that can be ruined.

Good luck! Now, with a little practice, you’ll soon be known as the party hero or as the new “MacGyver” of the brew world.

This summer, the fires have been burning at Dogfish as they will be shipping out a modern update on a ninth-century Finnish style beverage called Sah’tea. The beer was first offered on tap at the Dogfish brewery in May.

Dogfish’s version is a take-off on a Finnish style beer called Sahti. Traditional Sahti is brewed with a variety of grains, malted and unmalted, including barley, rye, wheat, and oats; then flavored with juniper berries in addition to, or instead of, hops. The old-school style of brewing Sahti also includes the step of heating hot rocks over a fire and using them to boil the wort.

To make Sah’tea, brewmasters carmelize wort on white hot river rocks, ferment it with German Weizen yeast, then toss on Finnish berries and a blend of spices to jazz up this rye-based beverage. In traditional Dogfish-style, they will break with tradition by finishing the beer with an exotic black chai tea at the end of the boil.

Reviewers have praised Sah’tea, comparing it to a fruity hefeweizen and calling it “a near euphoric experience.”

Lead Bryan Selders explains the Dogfish brewing process:

The hot rocks were successfully transferred to the wort and boiling ensued:

For those of you who missed it, on April 16th, the movie Beer Wars was broadcast Live in 440 movie theaters/venues across the US and was followed by a live broadcast panel discussion. Joe and I had the opportunity to check out the movie here NY in an almost full theater. We went into the movie with much anticipation as the movie was heavily marketed and seemed to support our enthusiasm and love for craft beers.

The movie was a nice documentary that took us through the history of the beer industry in the US, as well as, behind the scenes of some of craft beer companies such as Dogfish Head and the new Moon Shot beer company. We had the opportunity to see the struggles of what some of the Craft Brewers have to go through to gain a competitive edge against the big 3 (Anheuser Bush, Coors and Miller) which together have almost 95% of the market share among U.S. Brewers.

The live Discussion held after the movie consisted of a panel of beer advocates and was hosted by Ben Stein. Featured Panelists were Charlie Papazian (of the Brewers Association), Greg Koch (Stone Brewing), Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head), Rhonda Kallman (New Century Brewing, featured in the film), historian Maureen Ogle, Todd Alstrom (BeerAdvocate.com), and the film’s director Anat Baron.

Ben Stein challenged the panelists to many questions such as to why small brewers were intrinsically different than macro-brewers or what stops many of the craft brewers becoming the proposed marketing monsters that Anheuser Bush, Coors and Miller have become. The live discussion featured a couple of twist where Ben brought up footage unaired during the movie where one panelist trash talked another panelist.

Although the movie felt somewhat short and we couldn’t drink beer during the movie, the live discussion was an excellent addition to the movie and overall we felt like the movie was very entertaining, interesting, and informative. This movie really gave a face to many of the brewers such as Dogfish Head and Stone Brewing Company. I would encourage people to purchase the DVD (or hopefully rent on Netflix), pick up a 6 pack of your favorite craft beer and enjoy this movie with some friends.
